Tesla CEO Elon Musk has shared a major update on the production timelines of the Tesla Cybercab and the Optimus humanoid robot, signaling a significant leap forward in the company’s manufacturing strategy. According to Musk, while early production will be slow, long-term output is expected to scale at an “insanely fast” pace.
Tesla Cybercab Production to Begin Soon
Responding to a post on X by Tesla influencer Sawyer Merritt, Musk confirmed that Cybercab production is expected to start in less than 100 days. The vehicle will be manufactured using Tesla’s revolutionary unboxed manufacturing process, which dramatically reduces assembly time.
Once fully optimized, a single Cybercab could roll off the production line in under 10 seconds, compared to around 34 seconds for the Model Y. This makes the Cybercab one of Tesla’s most ambitious manufacturing projects to date.
Why Early Production Will Be Slow
Musk emphasized that all new products follow an S-curve production ramp. Because the Cybercab and Optimus rely on mostly new parts and processes, early production will be “agonizingly slow.” However, once systems are refined, Tesla expects production speed to increase rapidly.
Optimus Robot and Full Self-Driving Progress
On the technology front, Musk reiterated that Tesla vehicles equipped with the AI4 (HW4) chip will be capable of unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) without additional hardware upgrades. He also confirmed Tesla is reviving its Dojo AI chip program, with future Dojo3/AI7 chips supporting advanced AI workloads.
Investor Jason Calacanis recently expressed strong optimism after visiting Tesla’s Optimus facility, suggesting the robot could eventually surpass Tesla’s automotive business in importance.
Tesla Stock Update
Despite the positive long-term outlook, Tesla stock (NASDAQ: TSLA) fell 4.18% to $419.25 at market close before posting a slight gain in after-hours trading.
With Cybercab and Optimus nearing production, Tesla appears poised to redefine the future of robotaxis, AI, and robotics manufacturing.
